There are wedding days that are beautiful, and then there are wedding days that feel deeply alive. Ayala and Nathan’s wedding at Cheney Mansion on August 9th was the latter. Their weekend brought just about every kind of weather imaginable, including severe storms and constant changes to the forecast, but somehow, none of it ever became the story. They met every unexpected moment with so much grace, laughter, and trust in one another.
What stayed with me most was the way these two loved each other. It wasn’t loud or performative; it lived in the little things. The way they reached for one another without thinking, the way Nathan looked at Ayala, the way they could find laughter in the middle of a hectic day. They were so completely present with each other, and it made photographing their connection feel effortless. My job wasn’t to manufacture those moments. It was simply to give them room to happen.
Their ceremony was especially meaningful, with Ayala’s brother officiating and offering such a beautiful reflection on the two of them. He acknowledged their differences, their individual experiences, and the many things that make each of them uniquely themselves, while ultimately bringing it back to something so simple: being human. Two people can come from different places, carry different stories, and see the world differently, and still choose to meet each other with curiosity, compassion, and love. Watching Ayala and Nathan make that choice surrounded by the people who love them most was incredibly moving.
And maybe that’s what I’ll remember most about their wedding. Not that the weather cooperated, it absolutely did not, but that they never needed it to. They stayed connected through the uncertainty, trusted their people, and kept choosing each other. Their wedding wasn’t beautiful because everything went perfectly. It was beautiful because, through every change and every storm, they remained present for the life they were beginning together.
Ayala and Nathan, thank you for trusting me to preserve these pieces of your story. Your wedding was beautiful, but more than anything, it felt lived, loved, and completely yours.
